Why modern Mac data recovery is different
Three things make T2 and Apple silicon Macs (2017 onwards) a different job from every other laptop - worth thirty seconds before you decide what to do next.
The storage can't be read on its own. On T2 and Apple silicon Macs, the SSD chips are soldered to the logic board - or sit on modules paired to it - and are useless in isolation, because the encryption keys live inside the Mac's own security hardware. Chip-off recovery, the classic last resort, reads back only ciphertext. The board must be brought back to life, which is why a board-level electronics background isn't a nice-to-have in Mac recovery; it's the job.
FileVault is real encryption. If FileVault is on, we need your password or recovery key to get your files back - that's the point of FileVault, and no honest lab claims a way around it. Have credentials ready when you book, and treat "we can crack FileVault" claims elsewhere as the red flag they are.
The rescue tools can destroy the evidence. Apple Configurator's DFU revive attempts to repair firmware in place; a DFU restore wipes the Mac. macOS reinstalls, "Erase All Content and Settings" (which destroys the volume's encryption keys in an instant), and repeated First Aid runs on a failing disk can all take out exactly what you're trying to save. When the data matters more than the Mac, stop rescuing and get it assessed.
