The first question: what is inside your laptop?

"Laptop data recovery" is really three different disciplines, and which one applies to you is decided by what your laptop uses for storage. It is the first thing we establish at assessment, and it shapes everything - the method, the risks and the quote.

  • A 2.5" hard drive - older and budget laptops

    Laptops from roughly the mid-2010s and earlier, and some budget machines since, use a small mechanical hard drive: spinning platters, moving heads, and every failure mode that comes with them. A dropped laptop with a spinning drive inside is the classic mechanical recovery, and every restart after the drop risks scoring the platter surface.

  • A SATA or NVMe SSD - most laptops of the last decade

    Most laptops now carry a solid-state drive, usually an M.2 stick. SSDs don't click or grind - they fail electronically and without warning. The good news: if the laptop itself died, a removable drive is usually fine, and the job is a careful extraction rather than a recovery.

  • Storage soldered to the motherboard - thin modern machines

    Many current thin-and-light laptops, and every recent MacBook, have storage chips soldered directly to the motherboard. There is no drive to remove: if the laptop is dead, the data is trapped on a dead board, and recovery means board-level work.

What you do in the first hour after a laptop fails usually matters more than anything that happens later. Find your situation below.

The laptop won't turn on at all

  • No lights, no fan, nothing. Far more often than not this is a power or motherboard problem, not a storage problem - and that distinction is everything, because your files are very often still sitting there intact.
  • Depending on the machine, the job is extracting the drive and reading it directly, or board-level work to bring a soldered-storage machine back far enough to get the data off.
  • One of the most common jobs in the lab, and one of the most misunderstood - people grieve data that was never lost.

Dropped, knocked off the bed, closed in a hurry

  • What a drop means depends on what is inside and whether it was running. A running mechanical drive takes drops badly - heads and platters are moving parts in close contact.
  • An SSD shrugs off the impact itself, but a drop can crack solder joints, connectors or the board.
  • If your laptop was dropped and now behaves differently in any way - noises, freezing, not booting - stop restarting it and have it assessed.

Blue screens, boot loops, "no bootable device"

  • The laptop powers on but Windows never arrives, restarts endlessly, or reports no operating system.
  • Sometimes this is software - a failed update, corruption in Windows itself - with the data untouched behind it. Sometimes it is the first public symptom of a failing drive.
  • The dangerous move is the common one: reinstalling Windows or resetting the laptop "to see if that fixes it", which can overwrite the very files you need. Get the data secured first; fix the laptop second.

Deleted files, an emptied recycle bin, a factory reset

  • Deleted data follows the same rule as anywhere: the file isn't destroyed, the space it occupies is marked free - and everything you do from that moment risks overwriting it.
  • On SSDs there is a hard complication: modern systems actively clear deleted space in the background (TRIM), and deleted files on an SSD can become unrecoverable within minutes. On a hard drive the odds are far better.
  • Either way the advice is identical: stop using the laptop now, don't install recovery software onto it, and get it assessed.

It's getting slower, hotter, noisier

  • Laptops rarely die without warning signs: minutes to boot, folders that hang, a machine that freezes under load, repeated disk-repair prompts, or - with a mechanical drive - new sounds.
  • These are the cheap-to-fix weeks. A drive that is beginning to fail images far better now than after it has been pushed for another month.
  • If your laptop holds anything you'd pay to get back, this is the moment to act - while it still turns on.

The screen, hinge or keyboard is wrecked but it works

  • Not a data loss at all - but a very common reason data becomes at-risk: the laptop gets thrown in a drawer "to deal with later", then years later won't start.
  • If a machine with a broken screen holds data you care about, get the data off it while it still runs.
  • We can do that properly - full extraction, verified, onto a new drive - and you can deal with the laptop at leisure.

Spilled something on your laptop? Read this now

  • Do this immediately: power it off - hold the power button until it is fully off. Unplug the charger. If the battery is removable, remove it. Turn the laptop upside down in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the board. Then leave it off.
  • Don't put it in rice. Rice does not draw liquid out of a sealed laptop - it just delays the moment someone looks inside, while the liquid sits on the board doing the real damage. What kills liquid-damaged electronics is rarely the first contact: it is corrosion, which starts within hours and continues for days.
  • Don't wait to see if it still works. The most expensive words in liquid damage are "it seemed fine afterwards". A laptop can run for days after a spill while corrosion eats at the board, then die for good.
  • Don't use a hairdryer or put it in the sun. Heat pushes moisture deeper and can damage components; drying the outside does nothing about the liquid inside.
  • Sugary and salty liquids are the bad ones. Water is the mildest case; coffee, wine, juice and anything salty are far more corrosive and conductive. Sea water is the emergency case. Say what was spilled when you contact us; it changes the urgency.

How we recover data from laptops

The machine, assessed as a whole. A laptop recovery starts by working out what actually failed - power, board, or storage - because the right path for each is completely different, and the wrong path costs data. That diagnosis is what your assessment fee pays for: a firm answer and a firm quote, before anything else happens.

Storage handled by its own discipline. Removable drives come out and are handled as what they are: mechanical drives on hardware imagers built for failing drives, SSDs by controller and firmware-level methods. Nothing is recovered "through" a sick laptop - working the original machine harder is how data gets lost.

Board-level work where the data is trapped. Dead motherboards, liquid damage and soldered storage put the data behind an electronics problem. Diagnosing and repairing boards to the point the data can be read is the foundation our lab is built on.

Verified return. Recovered data is checked - files open, photos display, mailboxes mount - and returned on a new drive or by secure transfer. You approve the quote before recovery starts; if you don't go ahead after assessment, the assessment fee is all you've spent.

How much does laptop data recovery cost in NZ?

It depends on what failed. Extracting data from a healthy drive inside a dead laptop sits at one end of the range; board-level recovery from a liquid-damaged machine with soldered storage sits at the other. Assessment starts from $230 and gets you a firm quote for your specific machine before you decide anything. No recovery work starts without your approval.

My laptop won't turn on. Is my data gone?

Usually not. A laptop that won't power on has a power or motherboard problem far more often than a storage problem, and the files are typically intact. The job is getting them out safely - by removing and reading the drive, or by board-level work when the storage is soldered down. Don't keep trying power tricks from forums; bring it in for assessment.

Can you recover data from a laptop with a broken screen?

Yes, and it is one of the simpler jobs - a broken screen doesn't touch your data. We extract the data properly and return it on a new drive, so the laptop's fate becomes a separate, unhurried decision. The real risk with broken-screen laptops is the drawer: machines put aside for later often won't start years on, so get the data off while it runs.

I spilled water, coffee or wine on my laptop. Can the data be saved?

Very often, yes - if the laptop is powered off promptly and stays off. Liquid kills laptops through corrosion and short circuits, both of which get worse with time and power. Skip the rice, don't test whether it still turns on, and get it to the lab quickly. Say what was spilled: sugary, salty and sea-water spills are more aggressive and more urgent.

My laptop was dropped and now it won't start properly. What should I do?

Stop restarting it. If it has a mechanical hard drive, a drop can damage the heads, and every restart after that risks the platter surfaces. If it has an SSD, the risk is cracked connections rather than moving parts, but repeated power-ups on a damaged board help nothing. Power off and have it assessed.

Windows says my drive is encrypted with BitLocker. Can you still recover my data?

Yes - with your recovery key. We don't bypass encryption; nobody legitimate does. If encryption was switched on automatically with your Microsoft account, your recovery key is almost certainly saved in that account, and you can look it up from any other device. On a work or school laptop, the key is usually held by your organisation's IT instead. With the key, encryption is not an obstacle: we recover the data, and your key unlocks it.

Can you recover files I deleted, or get data back after a factory reset?

It depends heavily on the drive. On a hard drive, deleted files survive until they are overwritten and the odds are often good. On modern SSDs the system clears deleted space in the background, so deleted-file recovery is much less likely. A reset reinstalls Windows and, depending on the options chosen and the drive type, can actively erase the old data as it goes - treat post-reset recovery as uncertain until assessed. In every case: stop using the laptop immediately and don't install anything onto it.

The laptop is fine but it's become very slow and sometimes freezes. Should I worry?

Treat it as a warning. Slowness, freezes and repair prompts are common early symptoms of failing storage, and a drive in early decline recovers far better than one pushed to the end. Back up now if you can. If backing up fails, or the machine holds data you can't lose, that's exactly the moment an assessment is worth the most.

Do you recover data from MacBooks too?

How long does laptop data recovery take?

It depends on the failure and the queue. A drive extraction from a dead laptop is quick lab work; board-level repair of a liquid-damaged motherboard takes longer, and a failing drive must be imaged at whatever pace protects the data. You'll get a realistic timeframe with your quote, and if there's a hard deadline - a thesis, a court date, a departure - tell us and we'll be straight about what's possible.

The laptop is replaceable. What's on it usually isn't

Dead, dropped, soaked or just refusing to boot - most laptops that arrive in our lab still hold their owner's files, and the difference between getting them back and losing them is usually what happened in between. Power it off, leave it off, and let the lab do the rest.
