What is actually inside a USB stick

Understanding one thing about your drive explains almost everything about its recovery: a USB stick is a tiny computer, not a box of files.

  • The classic stick: controller + memory chip

    A circuit board with a NAND flash memory chip that stores your data and a controller chip that manages it. Your files are not sitting on the memory chip in readable form - the controller scatters, scrambles and error-corrects the data in a scheme unique to that controller family. If the controller dies and the memory chip survives, the data is all there and completely unreadable by normal means.

  • The monolith: everything in one sealed chip

    Many modern sticks - especially small, cheap and slim ones - fuse memory, controller and connector into a single sealed package with no separate circuit board to work on. Recovery means mapping the microscopic test points on the package, wiring directly to them, and reading the flash that way: the same discipline as modern memory cards.

Snapped or bent in the port

  • The classic flash drive disaster: the stick was in the laptop when the laptop moved, the bag was dropped, someone walked past. Sometimes it snaps clean off; more often it bends, kills the connection, and gets worse with every wiggle.
  • The crucial fact: the bend usually damages the connector and the board tracks, not the memory chip - which means the data typically survives intact.
  • Recovery is precision microsoldering: repairing lifted pads and broken traces or, when the board is too far gone, reading the memory chip directly. What ruins these jobs is the DIY straightening and hopeful re-plugging that comes after.

"USB device not recognised" or not showing up

  • You plug it in and the computer complains, shows nothing, or the drive appears then vanishes.
  • Behind this is usually a failing controller, degraded solder joints, or corrupted firmware on the stick - the data itself is normally still sitting in the NAND.
  • Each further plug-in asks a failing controller to do more work. That ritual almost never fixes a drive, and it has finished off plenty.

"You need to format the disk before you can use it"

  • The most dangerous prompt in computing, because it offers to destroy your data politely.
  • It means the computer can see the drive but can't read its file system - corruption from an unsafe unplug, a failing controller, or damaged flash.
  • Click cancel, every time. The files are usually recoverable at this stage; a format on top adds a second problem and can overwrite the map needed to solve the first one.

Files deleted, or the drive was formatted

  • USB sticks generally don't clear deleted space in the background the way modern SSDs do, so deleted files and quick-formatted drives usually sit recoverable until something overwrites them.
  • The enemy is use: every file copied onto the stick afterwards lands on top of what you're trying to get back.
  • Stop using it, and don't let recovery software write its findings back onto the same drive.

Gibberish files, symbol names, empty folders

  • Corruption in slow motion - usually early flash degradation or a controller beginning to fail, sometimes an unsafe unplug mid-write.
  • People tend to shrug at the first weird file. Take it as the warning it is.
  • Copy everything readable off the drive now, then get the drive assessed for what's no longer readable.

Completely dead, or through the wash

  • Total electrical silence usually means power isn't reaching the board or the controller has failed outright - after a static zap, a power surge through a cheap hub, liquid, or simple component failure.
  • Dead is not empty: the NAND holds its contents without power, and chip-level recovery exists precisely for drives whose electronics have died around intact data.
  • Washed drives are surprisingly survivable - the risks are corrosion on the board contacts and the damage done by plugging it in wet. Don't charge it, don't test it, don't rice it.

Snapped, bent or dead: what not to do

  • Don't bend it back. A bent connector means bent board tracks and stressed solder joints that are, for the moment, mostly still connected. Straightening it by hand tears lifted pads and cracked traces the rest of the way.
  • Don't keep plugging it in. A damaged connector can short power into the wrong place, and one bad contact can kill a controller that was still alive. The information you get from attempt number six is identical to attempt number one; the risk is not.
  • Don't let anyone solder it who isn't a data recovery specialist. A confident hobbyist with an iron sees four loose connector pins; they don't see the microscopic pads and multi-layer traces around them. Botched home soldering is one of the most common ways a routine recovery becomes a hard one.
  • Don't run recovery software on a drive with physical symptoms. Aim it at a drive that's vanishing, erroring or half-dead and it will hammer a failing controller for hours and can push it over the edge.
  • Don't glue, tape or case-mod it back together. Adhesives wick into connectors and onto boards, and removing set glue from a monolith's contact points is delicate work nobody should have to do.
  • And one for the future: a USB stick is transport, not storage. Flash sticks are built to a price, not an endurance target. When this recovery is behind you, keep nothing on a stick that doesn't also live somewhere else.

How we recover data from USB drives

Diagnosis under the microscope first. A flash recovery starts by establishing what actually failed: connector, board, controller, firmware or NAND. That diagnosis - not guesswork - is what your assessment fee pays for, and it produces a firm quote before any work starts.

Board repair where the board is the problem. Snapped and bent drives are repaired at board level: lifted pads, broken traces and damaged connectors rebuilt under magnification, with the aim of powering the drive safely for one complete read of the data.

Chip-off and monolith work where it isn't. When the controller is dead or the stick is a monolith, we go to the flash directly: reading the NAND, then reconstructing the controller's data layout - the scattering, interleaving and error correction - in software to rebuild your files from raw flash.

Recovery from the image, verified. Once the flash is read, your original drive's job is done. Files are extracted, checked that they open, and returned on new media or by secure transfer. You approve the quote before recovery starts; if you don't go ahead, the assessment fee is all you've spent.

Every brand, every size, every age

Flash holds data without power for years, but not forever - stored charge fades slowly with age, so a forgotten stick is best read sooner rather than later. How much does USB drive data recovery cost in NZ?

My USB stick snapped in the laptop. Is the data gone?

Usually not. The snap almost always damages the connector and board, not the memory chip where your data lives. These are among the most common jobs in the lab: board-level repair under magnification, or reading the memory chip directly when the board is beyond repair. What matters now is what you don't do - no bending it back, no re-plugging, no home soldering.

The computer says "USB device not recognised". What should I do?

Stop plugging it in. That message usually means the controller or its firmware is struggling - the data in the memory chip is normally still intact. Repeated retries across different computers ask a failing controller to keep working and can finish it off. If the files matter, have the drive assessed.

Windows is asking me to format the drive. Should I?

No - click cancel. That prompt means the computer sees the drive but can't read its file system, which is exactly the situation professional recovery handles well. Formatting adds a new, empty file system on top of your data and can overwrite the structures needed to get it back.

Can you recover files I deleted from a flash drive?

Often, yes. USB sticks generally don't wipe deleted space in the background the way modern SSDs do, so deleted files and quick formats usually remain recoverable until they're overwritten. Stop using the drive immediately - every new file saved onto it lands somewhere, and that somewhere may be your data.

My USB drive went through the washing machine. Is it dead?

Frequently not - flash has no moving parts and the chips are well sealed. The danger is what happens next: plugging it in wet or corroded is what does the killing. Don't test it and don't dry it with heat; get it to the lab as it is, where the board can be cleaned properly before power ever touches it.

The drive works but files are corrupted or have strange names. What's happening?

That's usually early failure - flash wearing out, a controller beginning to fail, or damage from an unsafe unplug. Treat it as your warning: copy off everything that still reads correctly, right now, then have the drive assessed for what doesn't. Waiting for it to get worse never improves the odds.

Someone already tried to re-solder my drive. Can you still help?

Bring it in - along with any pieces, and be straight with us about what was done; it changes nothing about how welcome the job is and everything about how we approach it. Home soldering makes recoveries harder, not automatically impossible.

Is a cheap no-name USB stick worth recovering?

The stick isn't - the data often is, and that's the only question that matters. Be aware that cheap and counterfeit sticks use lower-grade flash and obscure controllers, which can make the work harder. It's also the reason for our standing advice: once this is over, never let a cheap stick be the only place anything lives.

How long does USB drive data recovery take?

It depends on the failure and the queue. A board repair is a different timescale from a monolith read, and badly degraded flash must be read patiently to get the most from it.
