Scenarios we can help with

Damaged iPhone data recovery is most of what we see: phones that are dead, smashed or soaked, with a camera roll that exists nowhere else. Find your scenario - and whatever it is, the first step is the same: powered off, assessed properly, firm quote before any recovery work.

Your iPhone won't start

  • Stuck in a boot loop - the Apple logo appears, the phone restarts, and around it goes. Boot loops come from failed iOS updates, storage (NAND) faults and board-level component failures. The data is usually intact underneath; the job is diagnosing which fault you have without making it worse. Stop force-restarting it over and over - twice is diagnosis, twenty times is damage.
  • Completely dead - no logo, no vibration, no charge response - a power or board fault. On an iPhone, the data physically lives on the board, so reviving the board is the recovery.
  • Died after a drop - impact can crack solder joints and internal connections. A phone that's "dead" after a fall is often one careful board repair away from giving up its data.
  • Freezes, lags, restarts at random - sometimes software, sometimes a failing board or NAND. If the phone still runs at all, back it up right now, before anything else. If it won't stay up long enough to back up, power it off and bring it in.

Liquid damage

  • Dropped in the toilet, the sink, the ocean, the washing machine - power it off immediately, don't charge it, and get it to the bench quickly. Salt water is the worst of them: corrosion starts in hours, not days. (Kiwi summers put a lot of iPhones in the sea.)
  • It survived the swim, then died a week later - corrosion is progressive. A phone that "dried out fine" can quietly eat its own board over the following days. If it got properly wet, an inspection now beats a recovery later.
  • "It's been in rice" - same truth we tell Mac owners: rice doesn't fix corrosion, it just delays the visit. Bring it in as it is.

What we do: strip the board, clean the corrosion, repair what the liquid took out, and bring the phone up long enough for a full data extraction. A drowned iPhone is revived to be read - treat its long-term future as a bonus, not a promise.

Smashed, bent or crushed

  • Screen smashed, phone still buzzing - if the phone is alive but the screen is dead or unresponsive, extraction is often one of the more straightforward jobs on this page. Don't keep using it; glass and dust work their way inward.
  • The screen died completely - if the phone itself still works underneath, we can fit a working screen for long enough to unlock it with your passcode and extract everything that matters.
  • Run over, sat on, bent in half - phones survive remarkable abuse. If the board is intact, the data usually is too; if the board is cracked, board-level repair is the path. Bring all the pieces - every part can matter, including the original screen and housing.

iOS updates, resets and software trouble

  • Update failed halfway - now it shows the "connect to computer" screen - this is the highest-stakes moment on this page. A computer will offer two buttons: Update re-installs iOS and keeps your data; Restore erases the phone. If you're not confident, stop and call us before clicking anything.
  • Phone misbehaving after an iOS update - lagging, freezing, battery chaos. The standard internet advice is "factory reset it" - but a reset erases the phone. If the data isn't backed up, extraction comes first, reset second. That order matters more than anything else in this section.
  • Jailbreak gone wrong - a failed jailbreak, or malware that came in through one, can leave a phone unbootable or unstable. If it boots at all, back it up immediately; if it doesn't, it's board-and-firmware work on the bench. We don't judge - we've seen it all - but we'd rather see it powered off than experimented on.

Deleted data and factory resets - the honest section

  • Deleted photos or messages, and Recently Deleted is empty - on iPhones this is usually where honesty beats hope: every modern iPhone encrypts its storage, and once iOS lets a deleted file's space go, there's no lab technique that scrapes it back the way old hard drive recovery could. Check iCloud and backups first (see the top of this page); if a backup exists anywhere, that's your recovery.
  • Factory reset - accidental or otherwise - a reset destroys the phone's encryption keys, which is the point of the feature. Data on the phone before a completed reset is gone, from any lab, anywhere. If someone quotes you for recovering it, keep your money.
  • Where we can help - when the phone is damaged rather than wiped: the files aren't deleted, they're trapped. That distinction - trapped versus erased - is what the assessment establishes, and we'll tell you which side you're on before you spend anything on recovery work.

Why iPhone data recovery is different

Worth a minute before you decide what to do next, because iPhones break the rules that older data recovery was built on.

Every modern iPhone is encrypted, always. The storage chips are married to the phone's own security hardware - pull the NAND off the board and all you can read is ciphertext. That kills the classic chip-off recovery and defines the real method: repair and revive the phone's own board until it can decrypt its own data, then extract. iPhone data recovery is microsoldering first and data handling second, which is exactly the order this lab was built in.

Your passcode is part of the job. A revived iPhone still asks for its passcode - as it should. We need it (and proof the phone is yours) to complete an extraction, and we'd worry about any lab that didn't ask. What no honest lab can do is bypass a passcode you've lost: enough wrong guesses and the phone's security does what it was designed to do. We don't offer passcode cracking - on your phone or anyone else's.

The standard fixes are the standard data-killers. Restore, factory reset, "set up as new", trading it in "because it's dead anyway" - the routine advice destroys the very thing you're trying to save. When the photos matter more than the phone, the order is always the same: data extraction first, then repair, replace or retire the phone with a clear conscience.

iPhone photo recovery - the job behind most of these calls

Most iPhone data recovery is really photo recovery: a camera roll that never synced to iCloud, on a phone that no longer turns on. Baby photos, a relative's last messages, a business's job photos - the file types vary less than you'd think.

Whether you call it iPhone data retrieval, photo recovery or iPhone data extraction, the job is the same - and when we revive a phone, the extraction takes everything that matters: photos and videos with their albums and metadata, messages and attachments, contacts, notes, voice memos, documents. You'll get it back on new media, organised so you can actually find things - not a folder of ten thousand unnamed files. And if what you care about is one specific album or thread, tell us at assessment; knowing the target helps us verify the right things first.

How our iPhone data recovery service works

  1. 1

Book the assessment - from $230

Tell us the model, what happened, and whether you know the passcode. We'll also verify the phone is yours - an honest lab checks. In Auckland, drop it in; anywhere else in NZ, courier it overnight.

  2. 2

We diagnose it on the bench

Board-level fault isolation: power, liquid damage, NAND, connectors. No blind part-swapping, no "leave it with us and we'll see".

  3. 3

    Findings and a firm quote

What failed, whether the data is trapped or truly gone, and a fixed price for the extraction. You approve or decline - if you don't go ahead, the assessment fee is all you've spent.

  4. 4

    Your data comes back, verified

We extract, verify the things you told us matter most, and deliver on new media. Recovered data is held on encrypted storage until you confirm you have it.

iPhone data recovery in Auckland - and NZ-wide by courier

The lab is at 213 Dominion Road, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024. Searching for iPhone data recovery in Auckland usually means something went wrong this morning, so ring the lab and we'll tell you when to bring it in.

Elsewhere in New Zealand? iPhones are the easiest device we receive by courier: power it off, wrap it well, rigid box, tracked overnight. Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin - most of the country reaches us next working day. One thing to remember: don't post the phone in a bag of rice, and do include a note with your contact details and the passcode arrangement we agree on when you book.

What iPhone data recovery costs

Every job starts with the diagnostic assessment, from $230 - genuine bench diagnosis that ends in a straight answer and a firm quote. Recovery pricing depends on the fault: a screen-dead phone that unlocks first try and a sea-water board rebuild are very different jobs. What never varies: you'll know the fixed price before any recovery work starts, and the quote you approve is the price you pay.

What the assessment fee buys you

  • A clear explanation of what failed
  • Trapped or truly gone - a straight answer
  • A firm, fixed quote for the extraction
  • The decision stays yours - no pressure

If you'd rather not go ahead, that's fine - you'll know exactly what you're dealing with, and the assessment fee is all you've spent.

Why Kiwi Data Recovery for iPhone work

Since 2016, this lab's background has been board-level electronics - microsoldering under the microscope, which is precisely what iPhone data recovery is. Everything happens in-house in our Auckland lab: your phone and your photos aren't couriered on to a third party, and the person who assesses your iPhone is the person you talk to. We'll tell you what's recoverable, what it costs - and when the honest answer is "this one's gone", you'll get that answer straight, before you've spent anything on recovery work.

iPhone data recovery FAQs

Straight answers to the iPhone questions we're asked every week.

How much does iPhone data recovery cost in NZ?

The diagnostic assessment is from $230, and the recovery itself is quoted after diagnosis, because the fault decides the work - a phone that needs one careful reassembly is a different job from a corroded board rebuild. You'll have a firm, fixed quote before any recovery work starts. Details on the pricing page.

Can you recover photos from a dead or broken iPhone?

Often, yes - that's the core of what we do. If the phone is dead, smashed or water-damaged, the photos are usually trapped rather than gone, and board-level revival followed by a full data extraction gets them back. No honest lab promises a result before diagnosis - a dead phone and dead data are two different things, and the assessment tells you which you have.

I deleted photos and they're not in Recently Deleted. Can a lab get them back?

We'll give you the answer most won't: on a modern iPhone, usually not. iPhone storage is encrypted, and once iOS releases a deleted file's space, no lab technique reads it back. Your real chances live in iCloud and old backups - check both before spending anything. Where deletion recovery is realistic is on backups, computers, and cards or drives the photos may have touched; ring us and we'll help you think through where copies might exist.

I forgot my passcode / the phone says "iPhone Unavailable". Can you unlock it?

No - and treat anyone who says yes with caution. The passcode is part of the phone's encryption, and there's no legitimate recovery-lab route around it. What we can do: if the phone is damaged and you know the passcode, we revive it and extract with your code and your ownership verified. That's the honest boundary, and it protects you as much as anyone - it's why the data on a stolen iPhone is worthless to a thief.

My iPhone got wet. What should I do right now?

Power it off and leave it off - don't charge it, don't "test it quickly", don't put it in rice. Corrosion starts fast, salt water fastest of all. Get it assessed as soon as you can; liquid jobs are the ones where a day's delay genuinely changes outcomes.

My iPhone is stuck on the Apple logo or a boot loop. Is my data gone?

Usually not - boot loops are mostly failed updates, NAND trouble or board faults, with the data sitting intact underneath. The dangerous part is the rescue: a computer's Restore button erases the phone, and endless forced restarts stress a failing board. Choose Update, never Restore, or better - stop and get it assessed.

The screen is smashed but the phone still works. Is that a data recovery job?

It's the easiest one - and the most urgent, because "still works" doesn't last with glass in the frame. If the phone runs, get everything backed up immediately; if the screen is too far gone to use, we can get the phone to a state where it unlocks with your passcode and extract everything that matters.

Do you need my passcode? What about my privacy?

Yes - a revived iPhone asks for its passcode, and the extraction needs it. We also verify ownership before working on any phone; both checks protect you. Your phone stays in our Auckland lab, work is done in-house, files are viewed only as far as verifying the recovery requires, and recovered data is held on encrypted storage until you confirm you have it.

Do you recover data from iPads too?

Yes - iPads share the iPhone's architecture, encryption and failure modes, so the same board-level approach applies. Androids and other phones are covered under phone data recovery.

How long does iPhone data recovery take?

Assessment timeframes depend on the phone and what's in the queue, so we'll give you a realistic one when you book. Extraction after approval can be quick once a phone is revived; corroded or complex board work takes longer. You'll get a realistic timeframe with your quote.
